The Best Spring Getaways Near Pittsburgh

Posted by Helene McQuaide on 7th March 2020

Are you looking for a convenient getaway destination this spring? You’ll soon forget about those long months of cold, snow and ice when you visit one of these destinations, all located a fairly short distance from your Pittsburgh home.

Sharon, PA

After hours in the car, you’re often too tired and wired to truly appreciate the beauty of your vacation spot. At just 60 minutes from downtown Pittsburgh, Sharon offers the ideal location if you want to get away, but still be close to home.

Stately Buhl Mansion is the perfect antidote to boring chain hotels. The mansion, built in the late 1900s by steel magnate Frank Buhl, has been meticulously restored and now features 10 luxuriously appointed guest rooms and baths, complete with Jacuzzis.

Sharon may be a small town, but it offers plenty to do. A collection of quaint shops line the downtown streets, including Daffin’s Candies, the world’s largest candy store; Winner Department Store, a three-floor shop devoted to women’s and children’s fashions; and Reyers, which bills itself as America’s largest shoe store.

Nearby recreational opportunities including boating, fishing or hiking at Shenango River Lake and and golfing at Buhl Farm Park or Green Meadows.

Geneva-on-the-Lake, OH

Your busy schedule might not permit you to travel to Napa Valley, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a wine tour on your spring getaway. Geneva-on-the-Lake , located on the south bank of Lake Erie, is in the heart of Ohio’s wine country.

As a guest of the The Lodge at Geneva-on-the-Lake , you can take advantage of the resort’s very own wine tour. The year-round shuttle stops at eight area wineries, allowing you to indulge while someone else does the driving. The resort also offers a zipline, fitness center, bike rentals, a signature dining restaurant and indoor and outdoor pools.

Other activities in the Geneva-on-the-Lake area include performances at the Noble Art Entertainment Dinner Theater, spa treatments at Lake House Inn & Spa and hiking, picnicking, boating and fishing at Geneva State Park.

Cleveland, OH

If you’ve explored everything Pittsburgh has to offer, why not branch out to another city on your getaway? Only two hours away, Cleveland offers plenty of new sights and experiences. During your visit, stop by the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and the Cleveland Botanical Gardens, or take a tour of the house featured in the movie “A Christmas Story.” If you’re in town April 4 to 15, you may want to make time to watch a few movies or documentaries at the 42nd Annual Cleveland International Film Festival.

There’s no shortage of places to stay in the Cleveland area. Sawmill Creek Resort is a good choice if you want to get in a few games of golf during your trip or explore Lake Erie on a rented jet ski. If you prefer to stay in the middle of the action, the Renaissance Cleveland Hotel offers a convenient home base. The hotel is close to nightlife, restaurants and boutiques, and is walking distance to Progressive Field, home of the Cleveland Indians.

Loudonville, OH

While you’re at the hotel, take a dip in the pool, enjoy the cuisine at Huckleberry’s, or work off your meal in the indoor pool.
