How to Select an Architect for Your Pittsburgh Project

Posted by Helene McQuaide on 4th October 2017

Finding a good architect is one of the most important steps when you’re considering a Pittsburgh home remodel. Whether you’re planning to remodel in Shadyside, Squirrel Hill, Fox Chapel, Sewickley, or any other Pittsburgh neighborhood, selecting the right person to turn your vision into reality is essential. Here are a few tips that will help you find the best architect for your remodel.

Ask for Recommendations

Were you impressed by a project completed at a friend or relative’s home? Often the easiest way to find a reputable architect is simply to ask for recommendations. After all, if you can’t count on your friends and family members to provide the truth about their remodeling experience, who can you trust? Keep in mind that just because an architect was the right choice for your neighbor doesn’t mean that he or she will be the best choice for your project.

Conduct a Virtual Search

Set aside an evening or Saturday evening to review the websites of Pittsburgh area architectural firms. Most sites provide portfolios that can give you a good idea of the scope of the projects the architect handles. The photographs on the site also provide information on each architect’s style. If the style doesn’t mesh with your own, it may be best to move on to the next website, even if the work is impressive.

Consider Design-Build Firms

Design-Build firms handle the entire remodeling process from the initial designs through construction. When you choose a design-build firm, there won’t be any delay while your project is sent out to bid to local contractors. In fact, depending on the number of projects the company is currently handling, it may be able to begin your remodel just a few weeks after the architectural plans are completed.

Working with a design-build firm offers a seamless, stress-free experience. Because the architects and builders are employed by the same company, you won’t have to worry about misunderstandings or conflicts that can delay the progress of your remodel.

Ask the Right Questions

Once you’ve narrowed down your choices to two or three firms, schedule an in-person meeting at your home or the firm’s office. During the meeting, ask these questions:

  • What interests you about this project?
  • Have you worked on similar remodeling projects? May I visit the projects or see photographs?
  • How soon could you begin working on my project?
  • Is my budget realistic? If not, how much money would I need to add to get the features I want?
  • Do you handle upscale projects?
  • What potential challenges and obstacles may occur?
  • How can I ensure that the remodeled area or addition blends in with the rest of my home?
  • Do you offer 3D representations that can help me visualize how the remodeled space will look?
  • Can you provide referrals from previous clients?
