From 5ks to fall foliage fests to monster pumpkin festivals, there’s no shortage of interesting things to do in Pittsburgh this fall. One of these events just may be the ideal addition to your fall calendar.

September – October

The Scream District

Strip District

Brought to you by the creators of the ScareHouse, The Scream District offers two new attractions to designed to scare you silly. “The Basement” is for visitors 18 and over and features intense, R-rated horrors with low lighting, tight spaces and violent scenarios. The “Stalked by a Killer” escape room requires you to solve fiendish puzzles created by a deranged maniac to escape the room. The attraction is designed for ages 12 to adult, although kids under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

Tickets are required to experience the attractions, which are expected to sell out quickly. Times and dates are expected to be announced soon. Be sure to check the ScareHouse website often for updated information.

October

Gateway Clipper Fall Foliage Cruises

Downtown Pittsburgh

Held Friday, Saturday and Sunday during the fall, Gateway Clipper Fall Foliage Cruise offers the ideal vantage point to enjoy the fall leaves. Your cruise will include a brunch and the all-new Riverboat Revue show, featuring fun, games and music. The four-hour cruises depart at 11 a.m., but you’ll need to be onboard at 10:15.

October 5

Peoples Run Shadyside

Intersection of Walnut and Ivy, Shadyside

The Peoples Run Shadyside 5K course runs through the leafy streets and impressive homes of one of Pittsburgh’s most prestigious neighborhoods. Walkers are also welcome and can participate in a one-mile Family Walk. After your run or walk, you’ll be treated to a pancake breakfast sponsored by the Shadyside Boys & Girls Club and the Shadyside Chamber of Commerce.

October 19 and 20

Pittsburgh Monster Pumpkins Festival

North Shore Riverwalk, Pittsburgh

Pumpkins are more than just background decoration in this unique fall festival. Weighing hundreds or even thousands of pounds, gargantuan pumpkins are the main attraction at Pittsburgh Monster Pumpkins Festival. Festival venues are located along the North Shore Riverwalk at Great Lawn at North Shore Riverfront Park, the Riverwalk and the Great Lawn next to the Allegheny River.

Events include displays by master pumpkin carvers, giant pumpkin drops from cranes, pumpkin decorating and a pumpkin-themed race in the Allegheny River. Competitors paddle down the river in giant, hollowed-out pumpkins in this one-of-kind river race. During the pumpkin piñata event, kids scramble for treats after a 1,500-pumpkin filled with candy and other surprises drops to the ground. The festival will be held from 10 a.m. until dusk on the 19th and from noon until 6 p.m. on the 20th.

Wizard Fest

Hard Rock Café, Station Square

Do you wish you could attend classes at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry? Wizard Fest is the next best thing to enrolling in the famous wizarding academy. Win free drinks and wizard-themed swag during The Triwizard Tournaments, enjoy the wizard-themed music, play games and enter the contest for best costume.
