Golfing just might be the perfect stress reliever. When you’re contemplating your next shot, there’s no time to worry about your job or your home remodeling project. With more than 80 courses located within 50 miles of the Pittsburgh area, it’s never difficult to find a place to work on your short game. Below are a few of the area’s best courses.

Oakmont Country Club

1233 Hulton Rd., Oakmont

Looking for a challenge? Oakmont is considered one of the most difficult (if not the most difficult) courses in North America. It is best known for hosting the most USGA and PGA championships. But beyond the challenge and prestige of the course itself, Oakmont boasts very high expectations of its clientele - from private events to dress codes. So come enjoy a rousing round, delicious drinks, and an afternoon with Pittsburgh's elite.

Fox Chapel Golf Club

426 Fox Chapel Rd., Pittsburgh

Consistently ranked in the top 100 golf courses in the US, Fox Chapel boasts amenities far beyond golf. No matter if you enjoy spa treatments and massages, tennis, swimming, shooting, or more, Fox Chapel can accommodate your desires. The Clubhouse is also affectionately known for its weddings, private events, and incredible meals.

St. Clair Country Club

2300 Old Washington Rd., Upper St. Clair

St. Clair focuses on its members. This means exceptional amenities, food, beverages, service, golf courses, and expectations. If you are coming to socialize or play golf, St. Clair is committed to taking care of you.

Pittsburgh Field Club

121 Field Club Rd., Pittsburgh

Dating back as far as the 1870s, the Pittsburgh Field Club has a rich history rooted in serving its members. Beginning as a Cricket Club, the PFC now offers golfing amenities as well as tennis, swimming, shooting, bowling, fishing, and more. This club in particular focuses on serving the whole family with its varied offerings.

Cranberry Highlands

5601 Freshcorn Rd., Cranberry Township

The varied terrain of Cranberry Highlands provides natural challenges sure to appeal to veteran and novice golfers alike. The course was voted Pennsylvania’s best municipal golf course in 2009 by Golf Digest, thanks to its innovative design. Cranberry Highlands offers private lessons, practice sand bunkers, two putting greens and a practice facility with grass and mat tee areas.

Mt. Lebanon Golf Course

1000 Pine Ave., Mt. Lebanon

You don’t have to travel far from home to enjoy a great round of golf. Mt. Lebanon Golf Course offers challenging play on its 99-acre, par-35 course. Although early golfers had to dodge cattle and horses on the farmland that became the course, water hazards and sand traps are the only obstacles modern golfers need to worry about.

The Links at Spring Church Golf Course

3257 Brenhaven Lane, Apollo

Set among gently rolling hills, The Links at Spring Church offers scenic vistas and holes that demand your complete attention. The 18-hole course was designed by Dominic Palomba, Jr., and has hosted WPGA and collegiate tournaments. Before hitting the links, golfers can warm up on the driving range and practice putting green.

Olde Stonewall Golf Club

Ellwood City

It’s easy to see how Olde Stonewall Golf Club got its name. Holes are ringed by thousands of square hewn rocks that accentuate the hilly terrain. The course has been ranked in the top 50 public golf courses in the U.S. by Golf Digest and was one of the top 10 new public courses in 1999 in Golf Magazine’s annual rankings. Olde Stonewall Golf Club offers a practice range and chipping and putting greens.

Birdsfoot Golf Club

225 Furnace Run Road, Freeport

Birdsfoot Golf Club was also transformed from farmland into a top-level course that offers challenges on every hole. The course features 18 championship holes and five sets of tees. Full, premium, playing and sunset memberships are available, as well as memberships to the range. Birdsfoot Golf Club also offers junior and adult lessons.

Totteridge Golf Club

2029 Totteridge Dr., Greensburg

Built by Rees Jones and Tom Tanto, Totteridge Golf Course offers rolling hills reminiscent of the English landscape. The 18-hole, link-style course features fast greens, elevated tee boxes, selective bunkering and natural fairway mounding. The course also offers a driving range and several chipping and putting areas.
